On a trip to Costa Rica, I spent a day with a local guide renowned for locating small tree frogs hidden in dense foliage simply by listening to their calls, a skill that had taken him thirty years to master. I was struck by the patience and mindful presence such attunement requires.

Tagging along with him felt like being granted a kind of fast pass, allowing me to observe these inconspicuous creatures in their habitat. I left with a lasting affection for tree frogs—enough to imagine creating a National Frog Day. Through shared attention, he succeeded in passing on his love for them, even if not for the hundreds of species of spiders.

“[Samantha’s] images of modern farming methods provoke a reflection on the contemporary relationship between humans and animals... The formal beauty of her compositions makes a difficult subject approachable, persuading us not to automatically turn away. Instead, we are able to pause, consider, and reflect, and perhaps come to a greater understanding of the cultural and economic bonds between ourselves and animals.”
