About The Photographer

Samantha Bass’s photography reflects her passion for global exploration and conservation, depicting animals, indigenous peoples and cultures, and landscapes.  She uses photography as a tool to invite reflection, creating awareness, and connecting us to our fellow beings and animals.

Her photographs of the animal agriculture industry explore the relationship between humans and animals as well as where our food comes from, and have appeared in group shows in museums and galleries in New York and Lausanne.

She holds an MFA in Photography from Yale University and a BA from Vassar College.  She has worked as a photojournalist and currently lives in New York with her 16-year-old son who accompanies her on expeditions and shares her love for the natural world.

Regarding the “Animal Production” Project

“Samantha Bass explores the animal agriculture industry.  Her startling images of modern farming methods provoke a reflection on the contemporary relationship between humans and animals.  As the politics and economics of farming have changed, our relationships to animals and our representation of them in art have also altered.  Bass aims to explore these evolving relationships.  The formal beauty of her compositions, drawn partly from painting traditions, makes a difficult subject approachable, persuading us not to automatically turn away.  Instead, we are able to pause, consider, and reflect, and perhaps come to a greater understanding of the cultural and economic bonds between ourselves and animals.” Peek, Art and Commerce
